Hello bloggers! welcome to my first post in ‘how to succeed as a blogger!’ series 🙂
Although I never thought I would be writing about how to blog or how to improve your writing skills in general, yet I have received a quite amount of private messages on how I style my blog, what are the techniques I am using in my posts and so on. Despite the fact that I have been blogging for a short while, I have been writing for a little over 15 years. So, I thought I separate a category to answer all your questions about this amazing world of blogging! I hope through my posts, you will be able to improve your writing and overall experience as a blogger. So, without further ado, let me introduce you to what I consider the first three remarkable steps you should think of before starting your blog.
- What you want to write about?
First step Any writer should start with is knowing exactly what they want to write about. A successful writer/ blogger is usually someone who enjoys what they are writing about. I remember when I was a student in collage. The most repeated sentence I have heard from my teachers through my entire years in collage was “write about something you are interested in.” And they were totally right! If you wrote a post or even a book just for the sake of writing, readers will question your sincerity in your words. In fact, it will be obvious to detect an inauthentic feeling behind the lines and may not continue reading your post. Therefore, I highly suggest for you to at least be interested in your topic or the purpose behind creating a blog.
2. Read more and learn from other bloggers.
When I was learning a second language, my teachers back then encouraged me to read so I can learn new vocabulary words and use it to write correctly. Now, as a person who has been reading and writing since a young age, reading was a big advantage for my writing skills. Through reading, you not only learn new words and critical thinking, but also how to write grammatically accurate posts. The more you engage in reading (let it be books, newspapers, articles, blog posts ..etc.), the more your linguistic skills improves and eventually your writing will be sharpen. That said, I strongly recommend you read post by other bloggers in the same niche, comment and get in contact with them so you can learn how to also engage with audience. Thus, you will be able to increase your critical writing and learn how the blogging community functions!
3. Who are your target audience.
Selecting your audience will insure you a sustainable growth. For any job, which requires interacting with people, you need to understand first who you are talking to. For example, if you are about to give a speech, one of the main points they teach you in public speaking is ‘knowing your audience.’ Blogging, in my opinion, is similar to public speaking. You are talking to people through a screen, and you are trying to convince them to listen to you (read your posts). In spite of that, beginner bloggers still fall into this mistake without noticing it. By understanding the type of readers, you are aiming for (determined by your niche) or type of age group you want to connect with, you will have a clear vision on the direction of your blog. Plus, knowing your audience will impact the kind of content and style you share.
To sum up, I recommend you educate yourself well before taking the first step into becoming a blogger. I believe by narrowing down your purpose behind starting a blog, improving your linguistics skills via reading, and deciding from the beginning who your target audience will be, you will be more than ready for your next steps towards having a successful blog! I hope these tips were helpful to you. If you have and questions or suggestions on what you want to learn more of regarding blogging, I will be glad to answer you in the comments section below. So, feel free to write whatever concerns you have and I will answer them as soon as I can. Until the next post, take care and write more! 🙂
